We're running unstructured FM 10 on a VM, Windows 2008. This morning, while creating a PDF of a 700+ page book, we got an out-of-memory error and after that, we are unable to open any file in the book without crashing FM. Since we can't open the files, a MIF wash isn't possible. Our VM had 4096 MB of memory (most of which was consumed) when this happened. We increased it to 7168 MB, but it seems like some serious damage was done to the files. Of course, we have an upcoming product release (FrameMaker seems to be keenly aware of deadlines). Any ideas on how to recover these files? We can resort to a backup if all else fails.

PDF content different from Frame content
Using FrameMaker 12.0.3.424
Have a page with text content (formatted as a numbered list). In the Frame document, the last list item on this page is #6, with #7 appearing at the top of the next page. The PDF, however, has #7 on the bottom of that page and #8 at the top of the next one.
While this may seem like a strange curiosity that doesn't really matter, I have a rotated Master Page in the same file that is not formatting properly because of this (the wrong page is being rotated).
Anyone have any thoughts?
Update: I just Saved As PDF with the screen on the pages in question: As soon as Distiller started to run, item #7 moved to the bottom of the previous page, then moved back after the PDF was created! Why!?!?!?

How do I get rid of the information balloons that usually give paths and other info I didn't ask for?
Hi, all.
Frame has done this for years, and I put up with it, but I am thoroughly tired of it. You know the long text balloons that helpfully tell you things you didn't ask, and cover the text you're working in (or the menu you're trying to pick from, and so on).
I couldn't find anything about disabling them, in the archives. How do I kill them once for all?

How to generate a DITA ToC?
Hello,
I'm producing a DITA bookmap and I'm trying to insert the ToC (table of contents). When I insert the element, FM asks me to refer to a specific file. How can I automatically generate the toc and if that's not supported, how can I go about adding a toc? My impression is that automatic generation should be possible since FM uses DITA-OT to compile outputs.

upgrade from FrameMaker Windows 7.0 to 7.2?
I have FrameMaker 7.0 for Windows that I haven't used in a while. I'd like to upgrade it to version 7.2. Is getting it from 7.0 to 7.2 a free upgrade? I checked out the downloads page and it only has patches for version 7.1 and 7.2. I don't use it that much and don't want to spend any money to go beyond version 7.x. Version 7 does everything I need. I know this is ancient history.

extracting embedded visio diagrams from FM with ES
Hello fellows,
AFAIK, FM15 is not "aware" of the type of the graphic object that sits inside an anchored frame. Embedded graphics appears as OLE2. Is there a way to programmatically extract embedded Visio graphics from Framemaker files and leave all other types of graphics in place?

framemaker saves mm as inches in structured tables
Dear all,
if I open an xml containing a table in Framemaker 12 like
<tabelle class="uebersicht" spalten="7" widths="6mm 4mm 4mm 4mm 5mm 54.5mm 14mm"><tbody><tr>..</tr>
and switch from WYSIWYG to the XML Autor view the widths values are converted from mm to inch
<tabelle spalten = "7" widths = "0.236in 0.157in 0.157in 0.157in 0.197in 2.146in 0.551in" class = "uebersicht"><tbody><tr>..</tr>
We work with the German version and mm as default settings
I suppose - due to rouding errors - the dotted tabulator won't work any longer when I switch back to the WYSIWYG view
However if the document is saved in normal framemaker format and reopened everything works fine with respect to the tabulators. (The values are nonetheless saved in inch)
Some ideas to explain/prevent this behaviour?

Combining Diacritical Marks in FrameMaker 11
Hey gang,
I've got a document that requires me to place mathematical symbols in text. Some of these symbols don't have a Unicode component, e.g., the letter "V" with a vector arrow (→) over it. In Word, for example, you would type a letter, add the four-character Unicode and press ALT+X, or use the "Insert Symbol" dialog box. This doesn't seem to exist in Frame. Am I overlooking something?
TL;DR: Is there a way to combine diacritical marks in Frame to replicate this, or am I stuck using the Equation Editor?

Importing XML with graphic problems
Hi, I am importing an xml document into FrameMaker 11. I have a DTD, template, read/write rules and a XSL stylesheet setup in the structapps file. I am having problems referencing the graphics. My XML is:

Can I make FrameMaker text edits show in the Comment List in the PDF?
When I revise FrameMaker docs, I use edit tracking to show my reviewers where the changes are. So in the PDF, they must scroll through the doc and look for the green or red text.
Is there any way to make the FrameMaker text edits show in the Comments List in Adobe Acrobat? That way, my reviewers wouldn't have to scroll through the PDF, they could just click on the changes in the list. Some of my docs are hundreds of pages, and I really don't want to mark changes manually in Acrobat.

FrameMaker adds white spaces to text range formatted elements
Hi all,
I encounter a weird behavior of FrameMaker when I open a with FrameMaker saved sgml / xml file.
When a text range formatted element like "Emphasis" occurs standalone, FrameMaker adds white spaces in front and after the text range formatted content.
If there is plain text before the text range formatted content no white spaces are added.
Is there any way to stop FrameMaker from adding white spaces? e.g a special read/write rule?

Can you add a custom button to HTML5 and direct it to a URL?
I am outputting responsive HTML5 from FM 12 (soon to upgrade to FM 2015). I manually remove the Index and Glossary buttons from the output (this step will go away with FM 2015). I would like to replace the Index button image with a custom button image (of the PDF symbol) and make it so that when you click this PDF button, a PDF file opens (so the button has to redirect to the URL for the PDF). Can this be done?

Blank Book Error Log
(FM12 on Win7).
I update the .book. The book error log opens with the path of the .book file and the date and time.
Then, nothing else is visible in the log file.
What is wrong?

Hallo Miteinander,
ich habe vor einigen Jahren in Framemaker die Möglichkeit gehabt, viele Bilder aus einem bestehenden DOkument an einen neuen Ablageort verschieben zu können. (Auswahl Quellordner der Bilder und Zieltordner der Bilder; danach wurden diese Bilder in dem neu angegebenen Zielordner abgespeichert.
Ich weiss nun nicht, ob dies ein Plugin war oder eine Serienmässige Funktion von Framemaker ist.
WIe bekomme ich dass hin? Wenn nicht, wie heist dieses Plugin.

Framemaker 2015 crashes when saving a book
Two certain books that worked fine in FM12 now crash when I try to save. Is this a known issue, do you have any suggestion?
Otherwise I'll just have to strip it down piece by piece to see what causes the crash.
Note: The documents within the book work fine, it is only the books themselves that crash.

How to insert column sections within a document?
Hi,
I am converting a Word document into FrameMaker.
I have to insert a few long columns (sometimes over 150 lines per column section) at specific places in the text.
There might be a very easy trick to do that, however I haven't found it yet!
Basically, this is the document structure I want to achieve:
Column sections (in green) that start and end within normal text sections (just like we would do it in Word).
I have tried to divide my basic text frame and convert specific divided sections into column sections.
1 chapter divided into 5 sections:
section 1: regular text and graphics
section 2: 2-columns section
section 3: regular text and graphics
section 4: 2-columns section
section 5: regular text and graphics
However, these sections do not automatically adjust when I paste large amounts of text into them.
As a result, I end up having to manually ajust every divided section (stretch them vertically and push further down the next sections, as they do not move from their initial place (no "section flow")).
My questions :
1. Should I be using the column functionality in another way?
2. How can I make each section automatically adjust to to amount of text it receives?
3. How can I get my sections to flow automatically upon filling the other ones with text and graphics?
