Thanks in advance to the great denizens of Adobe's Blogs for the assist here.

 

My company is managing a large technical document -- hundreds, possibly thousands of pages -- that's scrutinized by government regulators.

 

We've run this document in MS Word in the past, breaking the work into multiple files. We have to Track Changes.

 

It is a nightmare.

 

 

We're exploring FrameMaker as an alternative, as we want to produce a document more easily (and swiftly) to PDF.

 

However, in my digesting of what FrameMaker can do, it sounds like the way Word tracks changes isn't really present in FrameMaker.

 

Neither is there capability to have multiple people working on the same document at once without somehow breaking it apart, just as we (hate to) do with Word. NOTE: We cannot use cloud computing or a separate CMS for this; the program's got to meet these requirements on its on.

 

Is this a correct reading of FrameMaker's capabilities?

Hi

 

I'm writing content with XML and I want to use the notice, caution, warning and danger labels in my content. For example if I'm creating a concept I can see those in the reference pages. I also found a way to add frames above and below from Paragraph designer. But when I save the file - close - open, the same file, my formatting is gone. (I did the same thing with fm-file and there this worked.) I created a new style, for example "notice" and imported this style to the template. When I create a new concept I can find my style from the catalog but I don't know how to use it (meaning, how to use it so that it remains when file is closed).

 

Is this related to using the elements? Which element I should use for a custom style? If I try to apply the style in paragraph element (p) the style is again "body" when I reopen the file.

Hii

I am working on DITA1.2  having some trouble while saving table ruling and shading.

When I create a table  structure and apply some formatting styles it saves properly and close it but when i am going to open this file again the formatting gets disappeared in Framemaker2019.

can you please help me out of this problem.

I have a well-established book file that was already successfully used to publish context-sensitive help for our previous release, and now it is no longer generating an .h file, or apparently reading the one I include.

 

Facts:

* my FM documents contain TopicAlias markers

* in the same directory as my FM book file there is a .h file called <my_book_file_name>.h

* this .h file contains definitions of mapIDs with unique numbers

* when I generate HTML5 output (even if I do it to a "clean" folder, so not overwriting old output), no .h file is generated.

* the csh.js file in my HTML5 output is empty

* if I look into the source of my individual html files, there is no CSH marker in there

 

what am I missing?

please help!

I am using Windows 7. The crash essentially prevents me from change preferences on the menu.

as many i have the same issue..i have tried all known ways to erase that extra page but it is always there

it drives me crazy,,,,does anyone have any "logical" reason why this happens and how can i prevent it from happening??

Chapter 5 contains a text inset.  Chapter 7 contains a cross reference link to content in that text inset.  When I create a PDF, clicking the link in Chapter 7 does not make the Chapter 5 text inset display.  Is there a way to fix this?

Good morning,

 

I'm running into "File named xx.fm does not exist" errors when I zip my FM book and its children files.

 

On my team, we create a "FrameMaker" folder on our local drive for working FM files. Once we've finished working with the FM files, we create a new, separate folder called "Source Files," and we copy the FM files from the "FrameMaker" folder and paste them into the "Source Files" folder. Other files such as Photoshop and Illustrator files are placed in this folder, too. Then, we send the "Source Files" folder to a compressed (zipped) folder.

 

The error only appears when we open the FM book in the zipped folder. The book can be opened from the zipped folder, but the children files are marked in the book panel (on the left) with a question mark. Clicking to open the children files produces the error.

 

One workaround we've discovered is that we can successfully open the children chapter files themselves from the zipped folder. It's time-consuming, but if we open each chapter file in the zipped folder individually first, the book file then stops producing the error.

 

Does anyone know why this happens or how to fix it?

• I am editing an existing user manual.
  • I updating information on several pages which will throw off the actual pages versus the TOC
  • I added two new header sections (Heading 3, not a chapter) that should show in the TOC
• I performed the steps to update the pages, chapters, and footnote for page numbers in the footer - all of that was successful.

 

However, when I save to PDF, the TOC is not updating.

 

• I manually add the (2) new headers where they should go by copying and pasting a similar. So they are there and formatted, but not linking.

 

1. I have tried several times to "Update the Book" with just the book open and not documents open, and the TOC does not update. The Update Book has nothing in the "Generate:" field. (see capture)
2. The "Setup Table of Contents" does not display on the "Edit" menu. I see the following.

 

How do I update the TOC to reflect the new page numbers and the new headers? Thanks!

We have a template that frequently gets updated, so we have a place on the reference page that displays which version it is. I was asked to make this field automatically update when the template file is saved with a new name, so I used the Filename (Short) variable. This works great until the template format is imported into a new document. Now the new document displays its filename on the reference page (mynewdoc.fm), rather than the template filename (template_041-112018.fm).

 

Is there a way to use the Filename (Short) variable in the template and make FrameMaker retain its text on the reference page when the template format is imported into the new document? Or do we have to go back to manually updating the filename in the template to get what we want?

 

We are using FM17.

Hello,

I have a cover page that uses figures, then a generated LOF, then a body page that uses more figures.

The figure numbers restart in the body page (and therefore in the LOF).

I have researched this issue and followed all suggestions to no avail.

1. There are no other counters using F: in the paragraph designer numbering.
2. I've searched for paragraph format overrides and nothing.
3. I've ensured that book and component files are set to "continue from previous file in book".
4. I have updated the book numerous times.

WHAT is going on here that I am missing?

Hi

 

I'm working with DITA and I would like to have a list of acronyms and abbreviations added to my book (save ditamap as book with fm components). I have learned that if I use Indexterm elements I can have a pretty nice list of these in Index page. But I feel that this is not the right way to do it.

 

I found also glossentry-file (or glossgroup for several entries) where I can have the acronyms and also the long term and with abbreviated-form element it should be possible to get automatically the acronym or the long one to the topics. But here comes the problem.

 

I don't know how to refer to this glossgroup, when adding to ditamap and then in topics with abbreviated-form. I have searched from web but I don't understand where these href, keyref and keys values are coming from. I have ID for the glossgoup and I guess that ID should be href or kref, but what are the others?

 

If glossgroup is used is there a possibility to get the list of used acronyms and abbreviations with the explanations added to the book?

 

All the help is highly appreciated.

I am not sure if the orginal source doc was prepared using Frame, but that's where I would like to end up. What I've tried so far:

 

 

Trying to import the file directly from the PDF into Frame -  only allows importing one page at a time. Is there a setting I can change?

 

 

Exporting the PDF as RTF, and then importing the RTF file into Frame -  results in a crash.

 

 

Converting the PDF into Word, and then importing the Word file into Frame - still doesn't hold on to its styles.

 

 

 

 

I have the Tech Comm suite - is there another tool that I could use?

 

Is there a straightforward and time saving method to accomplish this?

Hi folks,

 

I'm using structured FM13 and face spacing issues after table elements.

The spacing between the table and the next element is specified with the Table Designer (Basic>Indents & Spacing > Below). This works fine for all my elements but the note element. To obtain similar spacing as with the other elements, the spacing below for the table must be changed from 8pt to 18pt. I tried to work around with the EDD. Here is the structure:

    |-table

    |-note

    |    |-notesymbol

    |    |-p

In the EDD the rules for note element would be:

Format rules for first paragraph in element

    If context is: after table

        Basic properties > Paragraph spacing > Space above: 20pt

    Else

        Basic properties > Paragraph spacing > Space above: 12pt

This rule works but another possible structure torments me... the rule does not apply when the table is inside other elements, for instance:

    |-ul

    |    |-li

    |        |-table

    |-note

    |    |-notesymbol

    |    |-p

How would a fitting rule for this constellation look like? Is it even doable?

 

PS: the spacing specified in the paragraph format of the note element has no influence, this is why I change the spacing for notesymbol.

Hi, I was using the trial version of Framemaker 2019 v15.0.0.393 and the mathflow equation editor in structured mode (the settings were set to apply the paragraph style with the Euclid font), and after the update to v15.0.1.430, each time I insert an equation, only the default font for math is used, is the same document, above is the inserted equation after the framemaker update, below is the correct font being used, is there a way to reset the font settings ? or How can I make mathflow use the font I want and framemaker to display it correctly ? (the saved pdf does not use the Euclid font either)

 

Any help is much appreciated

Hi again

 

A strange function. I have created task and concept files and collected those to a ditamap. In XML-files I see the figure titles above my figures and there is Figure 1, Figure 2... in front of titles as wanted. But when I save ditamap as book with fm components, in fm files the titles are shown below the figure, Figure 1, Figure 2.... are lost from front of titles and the title is with very small font in fm files.

 

I checked the ditafm-output file and changed MoveFigureTitleToFollowImage=0, but no difference.

 

When I close XML-file and reopen it everything looks like it should.

 

I use FM 2019 (15.0.0.393).

 

Where is the problem?
