"Checkout all dependent files" not completed correctly for book

$

We're using the FM SharePoint Connector with unstructured documents.

When we check out a book and select "Checkout all dependent files" (for example, to rebuild the book), all the dependencies are checked out in SharePoint, including all the chapters and all the graphics files used in the chapters. The book and chapters are also copied to the local folder where Framemaker stores the working files (C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\SharePoint and so on -- I call this the "Adobe Secret Sandbox.") But the graphics files called by the chapters are not copied to the working folder.

As a result, when we try to open a chapter or process the book, we get the familiar "can't find the grapihcs" dialog asking for a new path, and the path we need to supply doesn't have the files.

We tried right-clickng the book in the Connector and using "Download dependents" to remedy this, but it didn't work. We have to do this manually for each chapter. (Another alternative might be to copy the graphics folders and files directly into the Adobe Secret Sandbox, but we haven't tried this.)

Adjust r/w rules to save anchored frame position

Hi all,

I have been trying to adjust my r/w rules, perhaps somebody has a hint for me.

What I need to do is save the placement of anchored frames for image elements (such as "in paragraph" or "beneath current line") when writing to XML. Vice versa the FM property should be retrieved when opening the XML file.

My idea was to write this into the outputclass attribute. However, it seems I was not able to fetch the correct FM property yet.

Any ideas (or better solutions altogether)?

How to format index entries

$

I have been working on a large FM9 document with an index. Many of the index entries are quite long and appear on a large range of pages. Currently I have the page numbers tabbed to the right of the column with a dot leader. On wrapping to the next line, following page numbers are (unsurprisingly) ranged to the left margin.

index.jpg

Ideally, I would prefer wrapped text (of a long entry) to range to the left, but wrapped page number to range to the right. I have been trying various things in the IX reference page, including defining IndexIX as right-aligned (no joy), and definging Level1IX and Level2IX as run-in heads (also no joy).

Is it even possible to achieve what I want, or am I banging my head on a brick wall?

many thanks,

Ruth

My question is, is the uique number in each marker text the same if multiple markers exist in the same location?

Thank you for your help.

Import method does not work

Hi there,

Does anyone have experience in using the Doc.Import method to pull another FM file in via a script? I have tried all settings but Frame does not recognize the file type, even though it is a perfectly normal FM binary file. I can import the file manually, no problem. But when calling the Import method from an ExtendScript, Frame keeps showing the "Unknown File Type" dialog.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I am running up against a wall with these freaking PropVals arrays. How come the stuff that works perfectly going through the UI does not work as it should when trying to automate things ?

Need some support with syntax from FDK to ExtendScript : Getting FontFamily

$

Hi there, I am using some scripts to traverse my text and add tags to specific characters when they use a given font. This works fine if the PlatformName is known, but every now and a while these seem to be not set. I therefore want to do the following : If no FontPlatformName get the FontFamily instead, but I'm struggling to get it working as the scripting references are a bit limited on covering conversion.

This is what's in the fdk (simplified for my needs) :

families = F_ApiGetStrings(0, FV_SessionId, FP_FontFamilyNames);

for (i=0; i < families.len; i++)

if(F_StrIEqual(families.val[i], "myFont")

     /* Do something*/

) break;

But I can't get it working on extendscript

What I have now is something like below :

var doc = app.ActiveDoc;

var families = Constants.FP_FontFamilyNames.GetStrings;

for (var i = 0; i < families.length; i += 1)

{

// alert fontname of families.val[i]

}

But I'm doing something wrong as it fails on my for loop. Anybody that can help getting the syntax correct ?

Thanks in advance already

How to know if an object is a File or a Folder ?

$

Hello again,

I am looking for an easy method to determine whether a File or Folder object point to an actual file or to a folder. Both objects seem to have the same set of properties, except the File element has more. But the Data Browser in the ESTK refuses to show the contents of a File object when I have not actively retrieved the properties yet. Is this simply a matter of testing whether a file-related property exists in the object? Is there another, more elegant method, an undocumented feature, for instance a property IsFolder or something similar ?

Ciao

Changing one font into another using extendscript

Hi there, I've been trying to replace one font by another, but no success , and it seems hard to find some good examples on how to do this, though it looks to me like something rather common to do with extend script. Could someone lead me in the right direction ? If for instance I would like to replace a font called 'font1' with weight 'bold' with another one called 'font2' with weight 'bold' into a document, how should I do this ?

Why does my DITA book show each topic on a separate page?

$

My question this time has to do with my book. After saving my ditamap as a FM 11 book with components, everything looks great except each of my topics is on its own page. Only .fm files with a paragraph tag of Title1 are set to start at “Top of page.” All others are set to start “Anywhere.”

Clues?

I’m clueless.

Copy text from FrameMaker 11 to another editor

$

It appears that one cannot copy text in FrameMaker 11 and paste it into another editor such as Notepad++ or MS Word. It is as though FrameMaker does not use the Windows clipboard. We observe this behavior with WYSIWYG View and Author View. On the other hand, we can copy text from the XML View and paste into these other editors with no problem.

This issue seems to have been introduced with FrameMaker 11, as we can copy and paste the identical text from FrameMaker 10. As another data point, unstructured FrameMaker 11 also allows copy and paste to an external editor.

Can anyone provide insight into why this behavior occurs and how we might modify it?

Thank you,

Structured FM and XML

Hi--

I am a Framemaker newbie going through the Structured Application Developer Guide. I am stuck on page 40 of the guide, on which I'm supposed to open the FM template (with the dtd imported, etc.) as an xml page. When I do, the page is covered in xml tags. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it to show without the tags. I can get xml pages to open with css applied--but not these xml files created from Framemaker.

I'm a newbie to mark-up languages as well as to Framemaker, so any help you can offer is greatly appreciated!

How am I meant to correct my Framemaker files to solve this Acrobat Distiller error?

$

When I attempt to generate a PDF from Framemaker 9 using Distiller 8.1 I get the following error:

"

%%[ Error: ioerror; OffendingCommand: imageDistiller; ErrorInfo: DCTDecodeFilter Second SOI or SOFn JPEG marker is disallowed ]%%

Stack:

-dict-

%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%

%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%"

No PDF is created. I've tried 'save as' and 'print'. I have created a PDF from this document several times before with no issues. I haven't replaced any of the screenshots in this version. Where can I find the graphic that is causing the problem? How can I solve this?

Thanks,

Niall.

variables like breadcrumbs in frame maker?

Hello together,

I would like to add a kind of breadcrumbs (at webseite -> you are here:  Start >  Adobe Community > Frame Maker > ....) for all headings in framemaker.

e.g.: You are here/Path: Heading 1 - Heading 2 - Heading 3

By adding variables with <$absText[Titel1]> just <$paratext appears. Titel1 is the Paragraph-Tag.

It should work automatically, ideally on the reference page, using cross references is to much work as I have always to choose the actual Heading.

Can anyone please help me?

Thanks a lot in advance

Text Frame Dimensions

$

I just took over a project with various text frame dimensions; I wish to make them all the same; which are best dimensions for standard 8.5 x 11 documents? Some of the frames are w 6.5, h 9.0 with the 1.0 offset on top and bottom. The header and footer ones read w 6.5, h 0.5, with a top offset of 10.0; the page number is very close to the text. I'm having trouble getting a neat aesthetic. Thanks anyone.

Is anyone successfully working in DITA 1.2?

Slight correction…

The results are the same when saving as a book with components or as a composite book. The difference is when I change my ditafm-output.ini file to a flat file. That is when I get the topics to run together properly but have all of the other issues. Sorry about the confusion.

DITA 1.2

We are having a heck of a time getting our books to behave in DITA 1.2.

If we save our ditamap:

  • As Book 11.0 with frame components, each topic is on its own page. Everything else works fine.
  • As a Composite Document 11.0, the topics run together properly, but the figure captions and table captions end up using our AnchorFig and AnchorTable tags. (AnchorTable is in the EDD to force a table into its own paragraph of only 6pt type. AnchorFig is a holdover that can be deleted. It is also 6pt.)

In addition, our <stepsection> element is now the first numbered step in a task and the <context> is now formatted as bold italic the way <stepsection> should be.

Task Examples:

Correct

<context>blah blah blah</context>

<steps><stepsection>To fram the wuzzle:</stepsection>  <-- Notice the bold italic here. That is as designed.

<step><cmd>1. Do something.</cmd></step>

...</steps>

What DITA 1.2 is doing:

<context>blah blah blah</context>  <-- Notice the bold italic here! That is the way <stepsection> s/b formatted.

<steps><stepsection>1. To fram the wuzzle.</stepsection> <-- Notice the number here!

<step><cmd>2. Do something.</cmd></step>

...</steps>

There are other issues, such as some graphics being cut off, and some table cell <entry> elements not behaving consistently.

Like I said, is anyone else using DITA 1.2? Are you having these issues?

Controlling text flow in a book

$

Hi,

I am a noob to FM, and I am chasing a quick answer to what may seem like a simple problem. I'm hoping someone here can help.

We are currently using FM to create various documents for assembly in to books. Some of these documents may be as short as a paragraph or two, others may be many pages.

What I would like to know is, is it possible to make all of these various documents part of the same text flow when they are combined in to a book?

What I am trying to avoid is having excessive whitespace on pages where there is only a little information. I would prefer to control the flow so that it just continues on from the previous document in these situations.

I am using FM11 on Windows7.

Thanks for any help, or clarification if this is not possible.

Representing XML Data in a Table

$

Hi All,

I have an XML document that looks like this:

<params>

     <param>

          <name>Parameter 1 name</name>

          <description>Parameter 1 name</description>

          <default>Parameter 1 default value</default>

      </param>

      <param>

          <name>Parameter 2 name</name>

          <description>Parameter 2 name</description>

          <default>Parameter 2 default value</default>

      </param>

</params>

I want to open this file in Structured FrameMaker, and make this information to be displayed in a tabular form. That is, I want to get a table where each <param> will be represented by a table row, and <name>, <description>, and <default> will be columns.

I know how to create an EDD for this, but how can I make it display in a tabular form?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Stewart
